Rheumatic fever affects primarily children between 6-15 and occurs approximately 20 days (usually within 1 to 5 weeks) after strep throat or scarlet fever. Rheumatic heart disease is a complication of rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever can damage the heart valves, causing them to fail to close properly or not open enough. When damage to the heart is permanent, the condition is called rheumatic heart disease.
