The tumor usually arising in the uterus developing from hydatidiform mole (50%), following abortion (24%), or during normal pregnancy (22%). There are two types of gestational trophoblastic tumors: |
- Hydatidiform mole tumor, also called molar pregnancy, is when the sperm and egg cells have joined, but there is no baby developing in the uterus. The tissue that is formed resembles grape-like cysts. This does not spread outside of the uterus to other parts of the body.
- Choriocarcinoma tumors, may have started from a hydatidiform mole or from tissue in the uterus following an abortion or the delivery of a baby. This can spread from the uterus to other parts of the body.
Hydatidiform mole is more frequent in teenagers and in women older than 40 years. The potential for malignant change is higher when a hydatidiform mole occurs in a woman older than 40 years.
All forms of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) begin after an egg is fertilized with sperm. Normally, the sperm and egg give an equal number of chromosomes to the developing fetus. Chromosomes carry genetic information about inherited traits. This is why we tend to look like our parents. Normally, each sperm or egg has half as many chromosomes as other body cells. So, when the sperm and egg combine, the resulting fetus has a normal number of chromosomes. |
