Basal cell carcinoma: |
- Begins as a small, smooth surfaced, well defined nodule
- Color pink to red
- "Pearly" translucent border
- Telangiectatic vessels overlying
- May have varying degrees of melanin pigment
- As nodule enlarges, central ulceration and crusting occurs

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: |
- Occurs most commonly in chronically sun-exposed areas in light-skinned people e.g., scalp, neck, upper extremities, back of hands, superior surface of pinna
- Often develops in previously damaged skin, e.g., solar keratoses, actinic cheilitis
- In African Americans - equal frequency in sun-exposed and unexposed
- Tumors present often as small, firm nodules with indistinct margins or as plaques
- Surface may be smooth, verrucous or papillomatous
- Varying degrees of ulceration, erosion, crust, scale
- Color often red to red-brown to tan
- May appear white in areas of moisture
- May arise in chronic skin ulcers, e.g., venous stasis ulcers
- May arise in scars
- Can arise in skin damaged by radiation, x-rays, etc.
- Varies from slowly growing, locally invasive to aggressive tumor with propensity to metastasis
- On lip, often arises in patch of leukoplakia
