Cancer of the tonsil is a head and neck cancer. It is also called pharyngeal cancer. It develops in the part of the throat just behind your mouth, called the pharynx and includes the following:
  • Back third of your tongue
  • Soft palate
  • Area around the tonsils
  • Very back of your throat

Cancers arising in the tonsils most derived from the squamous epithelium and are called squamous cell carcinoma (cancer). Generally, in the tonsil area, squamous cell carcinoma can appear as a whitish plaque (leukoplakia), ulcers or a exophytic (bulky lobulated) growths. Some tonsil cancers can be derived from the lymphocyte component but these are called lymphomas (cancer of white blood cells) and have a totally different prognosis in comparison to squamous cell carcinoma.

When a squamous cell carcinoma arises in the tonsils sometimes the tumor will travel into the lymphatics and float to these local ( regional ) lymph nodes. The majority of tonsil cancers typically have already traveled to the regional lymph nodes (metastasized) by the time of discovery. The larger the tumor is the greater the chance that the tumor has metastasized to the regional or distant lymph noses.
The causes of tonsil cancer is primarily associated with smoking. Excessive alcohol use is another causative agent ( carcinogen ) that can cause normal tonsil tissue to "jump the fence" and become a tonsil cancer. Any kind of chronic irritant to the tissues can damage the tissues repetitively and lead to the evolution of cancer in subsequent years. Stopping smoking and limiting alcohol use are the best ways to avoid tonsil cancer.
