- Patchy erythema of gastric mucosa: a common endoscopic finding; usually insignificant
- Erosive gastritis: a reaction to mucosal injury by a noxious chemical agent, e.g., drugs (especially NSAID's) or alcohol
- Reflux gastritis: a reaction to protracted reflux exposure to bile and pancreatic juice, usually associated with a defective pylorus; typically limited to the prepyloric antrum
- Hemorrhagic gastritis (stress ulceration): a reaction to hemodynamic disorder, e.g., hypovolemia or hypoxia (as in shock). Also very common in intensive care units (ICU).
- Infectious gastritis: commonly associated with Helicobacter pylori (possibly causative, maybe opportunistic); viral infection, usually as a component of systemic infection, is common; significant infection by other specific microbes is rare
- Gastric mucosal atrophy, sometimes called atrophic gastritis: frequent, in varying degrees, in the elderly; invariable in primary (pernicious) anemia
|
Gastritis can be caused by bacterial or viral infection, autoimmune disorders, or backflow of bile into the stomach (bile reflux).
|
Gastritis can also be caused by irritation from: |
- Medications (such as aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs)
- Alcohol
- Chronic vomiting
- Excess gastric acid secretion (such as from stress)
- Eating or drinking caustic or corrosive substances (such as poisons)
|
|
Gastritis can be classified into acute or chronic forms. The most common form of acute gastritis is acute haemorrhagic gastritis, in which there is bleeding into the gastric mucosa. Chronic gastritis is divided into type A, which results in pernicious anaemia, and type B, which is associated with the bacteria Helicobacter pylori. Chronic types can be subclassified as nonatrophic, atrophic, and special types (chemical, radiation, lymphocytic, noninfectious, eosinophilic, and others). |
- Acute stress gastritis--the most serious form of gastritis which usually occurs in critically ill patients, such as those in intensive care. Stress erosions may develop suddenly as a result of severe trauma or stress to the stomach lining.
- Atrophic gastritis is the result of chronic gastritis which is leading to atrophy, or decrease in size and wasting away, of the gastric lining. Gastric atrophy is the final stage of chronic gastritis and may be a precursor to gastric cancer.
- Superficial gastritis is a term often used to describe the initial stages of chronic gastritis.
- Uncommon specific forms of gastritis include granulomatous, eosiniphilic and lymphocytic gastritis.
