- Benign migratory glossitis, a type with unknown etiology, characterized by annular areas of desquamation of the filiform papillae on the dorsal surface of the tongue, usually presenting pinkish-red central lesions outlined by thin, yellowish lines or bands that change patterns and shift location every few days. Called also glossitis areata exfoliativa, glossitis migrans, erythema migrans, geographic tongue, and pityriasis linguae.
- Herpetic geometric glossitis, painful longitudinal, crossed, or branched fissures on the dorsum of the tongue, occurring as a manifestation of herpes simplex virus type 1 infection in immunocompromised patients.
- Hunter's glossitis, a chronic condition of the tongue seen in pernicious anemia, characterized by glossitis, glossodynia, glossopyrosis, and altered sense of taste; the pain and burning sensation are usually confined to the tongue but may also extend to other parts of the oral mucosa. Ultimately, the tongue becomes atrophic and assumes a beefy red color and a smooth shiny appearance, sometimes with small ulcers spreading over its surface. Called also atrophic glossitis.
- Idiopathic glossitis, inflammation of the substance of the tongue and its mucous membrane.
- Median rhomboid glossitis, a congenital disorder of noninflammatory origin, characterized by a somewhat rhomboid reddish, smooth, and shiny lesion with some opalescent spots, occurring at about the middle third of the dorsal surface of the tongue, immediately anterior to the circumvallate papillae.
- Moeller's glossitis, a chronic condition of the tongue characterized by superficial excoriation, principally of the tip and edges. The lesions are beefy red, well-defined, irregular patches, in which the filiform papillae are thinned or absent and the fungiform papillae are swollen. Called also bald tongue and glossodynia exfoliativa.
|
Changes in the appearance of the tongue may be a primary tongue disorder, or it may be a symptom of other disorders. Glossitis occurs when there is acute or chronic inflammation of the tongue. It causes the tongue to swell and change color. Finger-like projections on the surface of the tongue (papillae) are lost, causing the tongue to appear smooth. Also see geographic tongue.
|
| The causes of glossitis include: |
-
Bacterial or viral infections (including oral herpes simplex)
-
Mechanical irritation or injury from burns, rough edges of teeth or dental appliances, or other trauma
-
Exposure to irritants such as tobacco, alcohol, hot foods, or spices
-

-
Disorders such as iron deficiency anemia, pernicious anemia and other B-vitamin deficiencies, oral lichen planus, erythema multiform, aphthous ulcers, pemphigus vulgaris, syphilis, and others
