Acute gastric dilatation may be caused by: |
- Hyperglycaemia
- Childbirth
- Abdominal injury
- Application of a spinal cast
- Eating a large amount of food and drinking a large amount of water very quickly
- Rarely, after abdominal surgery when the stomach is in ileus and drink has been taken too soon
|
Dilatation of the stomach can be divided into mechanical obstruction and non-mechanical dilatation, or gastric atony. Mechanical causes include pyloric and duodenal ulcer disease, distal gastric neoplasms, and duodenal neoplasms, or duodenal obstructions which can mimic isolated gastric obstruction.
|
The causes of non-mechanical gastric dilatation can be subdivided into acute and chronic. Any disease process which results in a reflex paralysis of the neuromuscular system may cause acute gastric atony. Surgical vagotomy, child birth, pancreatitis, hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, trauma, and burns may all be causes. |
The stomach may be chronically dilated and empty poorly. Drugs, vagotomy, myxedema, scleroderma, and muscular dystrophy may be associated with chronic gastric dilatation and poor emptying. |
Diabetes as an acute or chronic cause of gastric dilatation is well recognized. Statistically, however, only a small percentage of patients with diabetes will develop gastric atony; and most of these will have manifestations of diabetic neuropathy, retinopathy, or nephropathy. |
