DESCRIPTION Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum tissue resulting in redness and swelling, most commonly caused by dental plaque. Plaque results when bacteria normally found in the mouth mix with proteins and starches found in saliva to produce a gritty material that adheres to the teeth. Plaque eventually turns into tartar, which accumulates on the teeth, especially at the gum line. Local irritants and some diseases, such as plasmacytic gingivitis and trench mouth, may also cause gingivitis.

Injury or trauma to the gums from any cause, including overly vigorous brushing or flossing of the teeth, can also cause gingivitis. The risks for development of gingivitis include uncontrolled diabetes, pregnancy (because of hormonal changes that increase the sensitivity of the gingiva), general (systemic) illness, and poor dental hygiene. Misaligned teeth, rough edges of fillings, and ill fitting or unclean mouth appliances (such as orthodontic appliances, dentures, bridges, and crowns) can irritate the gums and increase the risk of gingivitis. Medications such as phenytoin and birth control pills, and ingestion of heavy metals such as lead and bismuth are also associated with gingivitis. |
These common conditions are often progressive and can eventually result in loss of the underlying bone that supports the teeth. After age 30, periodontal disease is responsible for more tooth loss than are dental cavities. Severe periodontitis sometimes requires surgery to repair damaged gum tissue. |
The list of types of Gingivitis mentioned in various sources includes: |
- Acute gingivitis
- Chronic gingivitis
- Acute ulcerative necrotising gingivitis - also called "trench mouth" or "Vincent's disease"
|
|
Trench mouth is a painful form of gingivitis (gum inflammation). The term "trench mouth" comes from World War I, when the disorder was common among soldiers.
|
Trench mouth is an acute and painful infection of the tooth margins and gums that is caused by the symbiotic microorganisms Bacillus fusiformis and Borrelia vincentii. The chief symptoms are painful, swollen, bleeding gums; small, painful ulcers covering the gums and tooth margins; and fetid breath. The ulcers may spread to the throat and tonsils. Fever and malaise may also be present. |
Necrotizing gingivostomatitis (NG) ranging from necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG or trench mouth) to the rare noma is the most painful dental condition. |
The NUG lesion involves painful and bleeding ulceration of the tip of the interdental papillae in most cases. It also may have necrosis that is more extensive, however, spreading along adjacent gingiva and at times migrating to nearby areas of mucosa. When alveolar bone is exposed as a result of the necrosis, the infection maybe termed noma, especially when the necrosis extends through the mucosa to the skin of the face. |
