Sensitive teeth is usually caused by exposed dentin, the layer next to the enamel. A lot of things can cause dentin to be exposed. One most common is improper toothbrushing method. Too much pressure applied during toothbrushing using a hard bristled toothbrush causes abrasion on the enamel layer, exposing the dentin layer beneath it. Most common example of this is cervical abrasions, found in the "neck" portion of the tooth crown. The tooth can also be bruised or abraded from dntal instrumentations, especially after a restorative procedure. Accidental biting on hard substances can also bruised the tooth. Another cause of tooth sensitivity is exposure of the root portion of the tooth due to gingival recession. |
Pain from sensitive teeth is not always constant. It can come and go. Constant pain could be a sign of a more serious problem. It is important to discuss your symptoms with your dentist to determine the cause and proper treatment. |
Most commonly, the problem begins when the gums recede. Like a protective blanket, the gums cover the roots of teeth. As gums recede, the underlying tooth roots are exposed. Gums commonly recede for one of two reasons: |
-
Improper heavy handed brushing of the teeth. It is estimated that 50-90% of people brush with too much pressure. Over weeks, months and years of brushing they remove significant gum tissue exposing the tooth roots.
-
Poor oral hygiene can lead to plaque build-up around teeth and gums. Over time this plaque hardens into tartar. Bacteria in this tartar are responsible for the gingivitis and periodontal disease that cause gum recession.
|
Tooth sensitivity is caused by the stimulation of cells within tiny tubes located in the dentin (the layer of tissue found beneath the hard enamel that contains the inner pulp). When the hard enamel is worn down or gums have receded-causing the tiny tube surfaces to be exposed-pain can be caused by eating or drinking food and beverages that are hot or cold; touching your teeth; or exposing them to cold air. |
Hot and cold temperature changes cause your teeth to expand and contract. Over time, your teeth can develop microscopic cracks that allow these sensations to seep through to the nerves. Exposed areas of the tooth can cause pain and even affect or change your eating, drinking and breathing habits. Taking a spoonful of ice cream, for example, can be a painful experience for people with sensitive teeth. |
The following list of stimuli can lead to pain from sensitive teeth: |
-
Cold foods or beverages
-
Contact with exposed dentin when brushing for instance
-
Cosmetic whitening / bleaching
-
Overly aggressive brushing causing tooth abrasion
-
Receding gums
