Male menopause is, thus, a physical condition with psycho-logical, interpersonal, social, and spiritual dimensions. |
Female menopause has been known for centuries, but it has only recently been discovered that males also go through a similar phenomenon with identical symptoms. |
Hormonal changes greatly affect men going through male menopause. Lowered levels of hormones at mid-life are central to the changes associated with male menopause. |
Increased depression and weight gain, in addition to decreased sex drive and sense of well-being and health, correspond to lowered levels of particular hormones (dopamine, oxytocin, vasopressin, growth hormone, melatonin, DHEA, pregnenolone, thyroid hormone and testosterone). Although these hormones tend to decrease with age, each man is unique and individual levels vary widely. |
The purpose of male menopause is to signal the end of First Adulthood and prepare men for Second Adulthood. The initial signs often involve changes in a man's sexuality. |
Although most people know that Menopause has generated a large population of women who have excessive rates of bone fracture and CHD, men also suffer from these conditions. The male menopause or Andropause, is due to hypogonadism-low testosterone levels. Andropause, the word, appeared in the literature in 1952 and is defined at the "natural cessation of the sexual function in older men." Andropause also refers to sexual regression in men over 40 due to dropping male hormone levels. |
Endocrinologically, the difference between the hypogonadal man and the post-menopausal hypogonadal woman is not very great. Neither has adequate levels of androgens or estrogens and they both can be expected to show similar tendencies; i.e., hypogonadal men also tend to have frequent MI's and bone fractures from osteoporosis. There is current evidence of a protective effect of testosterone against both heart attacks and bone fractures. |
The loss of sexual drive is one of the first changes most people notice with "aging". This decreased libido and failure to awaken with erections is the foreboding of the "impotence experienced by hypogonadal men". Women too experience a lessening of their desire but usually this does not occur until their testosterone levels drop below normal if they have their ovaries removed. |

SYMPTOMS The symptoms of male menopause are similar to the ones women experience and can sometimes be as overwhelming. However, the male menopause does not affect all men, at least not with the same intensity. Approximately 40 % of men between 40 and 60 will experience some degree of lethargy, depression, increased irritability, mood swings, hot flushes, insomnia, decreased libido, weakness, loss of both lean body mass and bone mass (making them susceptible to hip fractures) and difficulty in attaining and sustaining erections (impotence).
|
The most common physical symptoms of male menopause include: |
- Taking longer to recover from injuries and illness.
- Less endurance for physical activity.
- Feeling fat and gaining weight.
- Difficulty reading small print.
- Loss or thinning of hair.
- Sleep disturbances and fatigue.
- "Sore body syndrome" - stiffness.
- Excessive sweating.
- Cold hands and feet.
- Itching.
|

- Indecisiveness.
- Anxiety and fear.
- Depression.
- Loss of self-confidence and joy.
- Loss of purpose and direction in life.
- Feeling lonely, unattractive and unloved.
- Forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating.
|
The most common sexual symptoms of male menopause include: |
- Reduced interest in sex. Men may require direct physical stimulation to get an erection; a sexy sight or fantastic fantasy
- May not arouse them as it did before.
Increased anxiety and fear about losing sexual potency.
- Increased fantasies about having sex with a new and younger partner.
- More relationship problems and fights over sex, love and intimacy.
- Loss of erection during sexual activity (impotence).
- Erections may take longer to occur and the full erection may not get quite as firm as it used to.
- There is less of an urge to ejaculate. Sometimes a man might not feel the need to orgasm at all.
- The force of ejaculation is not as strong as it once was. The amount of the ejaculate is less and one may have fewer sperm.
- The testicles shrink and the scrotal sack droops.
- The sack does not bunch up as much during arousal.
|
 |
Since the physical, psychological and sexual aspects are interconnected, most of these symptoms can be prevented and treated by concentrating on the whole man. |
