Amenorrhea

  • Primary amenorrhea - from the beginning and usually lifelong; menstruation never begins at puberty.
  • Secondary amenorrhea - due to some physical cause and usually of later onset; a condition in which menstrual periods which were at one time normal and regular become increasing abnormal and irregular or absent.
Most girls begin menstruating between ages 9 and 18, with an average around 12 years old. Primary amenorrhea is not considered to have occurred until a girl is beyond age 16, if she has undergone other normal changes that occur during puberty. A woman normally menstruates every 23 to 35 days. The cycle is regulated by the portion of the brain called the hypothalamus, which also controls body temperature, appetite and blood pressure.
