| Four types of vulvar dystrophy are: |

Squamous cell hyperplasia is an irregular white or gray patch of the skin of the vulva that is slightly raised (thickened).

Lichen simplex chronicus is a thickened white area usually on just one side of the vulva.

Lichen sclerosis may cause an area of thin skin in the vulva. It happens mostly during puberty and menopause, but it can occur at any age.

Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. It can cause symptoms on the skin or in the mouth and sometimes in the vulvar or vaginal area. Severe cases in the genital area can cause painful red areas or sores.

Lichen sclerosus is the most common of the vulval dystrophies, and may represent an autoimmune disorder. It primarily affects the vulva but in 20% of cases, affects other sites such as the thighs or perineum. Patient's are usually aged 45 - 60 years. Uncommonly, it may affect prepubertal girls. |
Vulvar dystrophies can also be classified into two main types: thick lesions and thin skin. |
The thickened type of vulvar dystrophy is usually caused by irritation. It can develop at any age. It often starts with itching or burning in the vulvar area. If the irritation continues, the skin will develop a white, thickened surface with some cracking. Bleeding may also occur. |
Thin skin vulvar dystrophy is mostly found in menopausal women. Itching and pain during sex are often the first symptoms. |

SYMPTOMS Symptoms include vulvar pruritus, superficial dyspareunia, or lesions that may be white, red, pigmented, raised, or ulcerated. Fissures, cracks, and bruising of the skin in this region are not uncommon. It is remarkably that the malignant changes in this region will probably grow into cancerous disease in 5-10% of the patients with vulvar dystrophy. And 50% of the patients with vuvlar cancer have a history of affecting by chronical vulvar dystrophy. It is, therefore, also called pre-cancer changes clinically.
