There are several stages and types of spontaneous abortion: |

Threatened abortion - A threatened abortion is when symptoms of a miscarriage occur within the first 20 weeks of pregnancy and indicate that a miscarriage is possible. Vaginal bleeding is the most common symptom.

Inevitable abortion - In an inevitable abortion, a miscarriage is imminent.

Incomplete abortion - In an incomplete abortion, some of the pregnancy tissues remains inside the woman and will be expelled over time or may need to be removed by a health-care provider.

Complete spontaneous abortion - During a complete spontaneous abortion, all of the pregnancy tissues are expelled from the uterus.

Missed abortion - In a missed abortion, the fetus has not developed or has died, but pregnancy tissues have not been expelled from the uterus, and the woman may not have the typical symptoms of a miscarriage.

Habitual spontaneous abortion - three or more consecutive spontaneous abortions. Risk of another spontaneous abortion is approximately 25-30% with 70% rate of successful pregnancy in subsequent pregnancy.

Early spontaneous abortion (the most prevalent) is usually due to fetal malformations or chromosomal abnormalities. Spontaneous abortion during the last two thirds of pregnancy is more likely to be due to maternal factors, for example abnormalities of the cervix or uterus, insufficient progesterone, sexually transmitted diseases that affect the genital tract, endocrine dysfunction (as in hypothyroidism and diabetes mellitus), or severe emotional trauma. Immunological reactions, in which maternal antibodies mistake the fetus for foreign tissue, have been implicated in recurrent, or habitual spontaneous abortions. It is estimated that at least 20% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage (estimates range from 15% to 75%). Most occur in the first two weeks after conception, and in many cases the mother is not aware of the pregnancy. |
