The vocal cords (or folds) are two small muscles located within the larynx (voice box) that are responsible for voice production. Often there is a history of shouting or screaming followed by a sudden onset of hoarseness or loss of voice. In other cases the voice change may only become apparent gradually. The voice may become deep and rough, and the range of the voice is often restricted. Some patients find that speaking louder is easier than speaking softly but this causes the voice to tire and they experience discomfort and dryness in the throat. It can also be difficult to control the loudness of the voice and it may cut-out in mid conversation. Very large polyps can cause difficulty breathing and episodes of choking. |
