The upper airway region (nose, mouth, and throat above the larynx) is collapsible to enable us to talk and swallow. More than than 30 pairs of muscles control the degree of openness of the airway in a process of balancing the natural tendency to collapse with the need to maintain an open airway. Snoring sounds are produced when these relaxed tissues vibrate with airflow ("flap in the breeze" if you will1). Certain structural abnormalities - enlarged adenoids or tonsils, abnormalities of facial bone structure, or obesity can disrupt this balance in the direction of more easy obstruction of the airway and hence more noisy breathing.
During deeper, non-REM sleep (when we are not dreaming), breathing is regular but more shallow. There is marked relaxation of the muscles in the upper airway region, which causes increased resistance to airflow in the upper airway and may produce snoring sounds. When we dream, the the muscles of the upper airway relax even more. Breathing is more erratic with regard to rate and depth. There are frequent pauses, and snoring may be more pronounced.
People are often not aware that they snore. About one-third of older adults snore. Snoring in children is a common complaint of parents. About 12% of normal children snore to some degree during childhood. The snoring may not be indicative of underlying problems with nighttime respiration, but it is potentially a sign of more serious underlying disease - obstructive sleep apnea. While most children who snore do not have obstructive sleep apnea, it must nevertheless be considered as a possibility for every child who snores.
Sometimes snoring can be a sign of a serious sleep disorder called sleep apnea. This means you have periods when you are not breathing for more than 10 seconds while you sleep. These periods of "apnea" are indicated by a long period of silence just after you have been snoring. They are followed by a sudden snort or gasp when breathing resumes. Then, snoring starts all over again. If you have sleep apnea, this cycle generally happens several times a night.
Sleep apnea may contribute to heart disease, stroke and hypertension. An additional cum unexpected health risk posed to snorers with sleep apnea is type II diabetes. Researchers found that when apnea limits a constant flow of oxygen and allows a buildup of carbon dioxide, the adrenal glands will hurry into action to produce more catecholamines (e.g. stress hormones like epinephrine and norepinephrine) in response to this unnatural air-traffic situation. Elevated levels of catecholamines will reduce the effectiveness of insulin which could possibly lead to diabetes in time to come.
Primary Snoring, also known as simple snoring, snoring without sleep apnea, noisy breathing during sleep, benign snoring, rhythmical snoring and continous snoring is characterized by loud upper airway breathing sounds in sleep without episodes of apnea (cessation of breath).
There are many reasons why people snore. Here are some of the most common:
  • Seasonal allergies can make some people's noses stuffy and cause them to snore.
  • Blocked nasal passages or airways (due to a cold or sinus infection) can cause a rattling snore.
  • A deviatedseptum, which is the tissue and cartilage that separates the two nostrils in your nose, may be crooked. Some people with a very deviated septum have surgery to straighten it out. This also helps them breathe better - not just stop snoring.
  • Enlarged or swollen tonsils or adenoids may cause a person to snore. Tonsils and adenoids (adenoids are glands located inside of your head, near the inner parts of your nasal passages) help trap harmful bacteria, but they can become very big and swollen all of the time. Many kids who snore have this problem.
  • Drinking alcohol can relax the tongue and throat muscles too much, which partially blocks air movement as someone is breathing and can contribute to snoring noises.
  • Being overweight can cause narrowing of the air passages. Many people who are very overweight snore.
  • Long soft palate and/or uvula. A long palate narrows the opening from the nose into the throat. As it dangles, it acts as a noisy flutter valve during relaxed breathing. A long uvula makes matters even worse.
  • Sleeping pills or antihistamines at bedtime
  • Last month of pregnancy.
