The skin normally has many types of bacteria living on it, but intact skin is an effective barrier that keeps these bacteria from entering and growing within the body. When there is a break in the skin, however, bacteria can enter the body and grow there, causing infection and inflammation. The skin tissues in the infected area become red, hot, irritated and painful.
Skin on the lower legs or face is most commonly affected by this infection, though cellulitis can occur on any part of your skin. The infection may only be superficial, but it may also affect the tissues underlying your skin and can spread to your lymph nodes and bloodstream.
Left untreated, the spreading bacterial infection may rapidly turn into a life-threatening condition. That's why it's important to recognize the signs and symptoms of cellulitis and to seek immediate medical attention if they occur.
Cellulitis is most common on the face and lower legs, although skin on other areas of the body may sometimes be involved.
A common cause of cellulitis is from athlete's foot. Athlete's foot is usually a mild fungal infection but it can cause tiny cracks in the skin between the toes. Bacteria may then get under the skin and travel to the calf causing cellulitis. The cellulitis can be treated but it may recur if the athlete's foot is not also treated. People more prone to cellulits, such as those with lymphoedema and the obese, should be careful to treat any athlete's foot promptly. Itchiness between the toes is the first sign of athlete's foot.
People at risk for getting cellulitis include:
  • Insect bites and stings, animal bite, or human bite
  • Injury or trauma with a break in the skin (skin wounds)
  • History of peripheral vascular disease
  • Diabetes-related or ischemic ulcers
  • Recent cardiovascular, pulmonary (lung), dental or other procedures
  • Use of immunosuppressive or corticosteroid medications
