Chilblains are painful but they cause little or no permanent impairment.
Chilblains are usually caused by an abnormal reaction of the body to the cold. People who have poor circulation, an inadequate diet, or an allergic response to low temperatures are vulerable to chilblains.
Flesh exposed to severe enough cold becomes damaged through the freezing of the small blood vessels within the flesh. Called capillaries, these are the final vessels of blood flow and will not re-grow once destroyed by cold. Therefore, a tiny area of skin and flesh dies and a small area of ulceration may break out. The areas of the body at biggest risk of this are the extremities, i.e. fingers and toes and the end of the nose.
Causes of Chilblains include:
  • A chilblain is an abnormal reaction to cold.
  • Elderly people with a poor circulation are at a greater risk.
  • Young adults who work outdoors or in cold conditions, such as butchers, are also at risk.
  • If the skin is chilled and then followed by too rapid warming such as a gas fire, a chilblain may develop.
  • Damp living conditions can also be a contributing factor.
  • The sudden onset of very cold water on the skin can also lead to a chilblain.
  • Other contributing factors include dietary, hormonal imbalance and people who suffer from anemia.
SYNONYMS N/A
SYMPTOMS The initial frostbite is often overlooked because of numbness resulting from the skin damage. There is a small white patch of skin, white because blood flow to that area has been destroyed. It takes a day or two for any ulcer to appear as the chilled cells break down; the area becomes painful and itchy once blood flow returns to those parts which have not yet been destroyed.
Some of the most common symptoms are:
  • Redness or pallor of affected areas (fingers, nose, ears)
  • Hot, tender, itching skin
  • Absence of pain (numb)
  • May have ulcerated or bleeding lesions
