A corn is a small area of thickened skin that occurs on the top or side of a toe. It is usually the result of friction or pressure from shoes that do not fit properly. A callus may develop on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet in areas where pressure or friction occur.
The thickening of the skin is a protective reaction designed to provide protection. For example, farmers and rowers get callused hands that prevent them from getting painful blisters during their activities.
There are two main types of corns, hard corns (Heloma Durum) and soft corns (Heloma Molle).
A hard corn is a compact lump with a thick core. Hard corns usually form on the tops of the toes, on the outside of the little toe, or on the sole of the foot.
A soft corn is a small, inflamed patch of skin with a smooth center. Soft corns usually appear between the toes.
A seed corn is the least common type of corn. Occurring only on the heel or ball of the foot, a seed corn consists of a circle of stiff skin surrounding a plug of cholesterol.
A plantar callus, a callus that occurs on the sole of the foot, has a white center. Hereditary calluses develop where there is no apparent friction, run in families, and occur most often in children.
The most common reason for hard corn formation is fitting a curled toe into a flat shoe. Curled toes are common, and because the toe remains curled within the confines of the shoe, the toe is constantly pressed against the top of the shoe. The skin protects the joint underneath by thickening, and thus develops a hard corn.
Soft corns typically develop between the fourth and fifth toes when one of the toe bones in the toe is too wide. This causes friction between the toes and may result in the formation of a soft corn. This problem can be aggravated by wearing shoes that fit too tightly, wearing high-heeled shoes, or cramming the toes into a narrow tapering toe box.
