Pemphigus has several types. Each type looks and acts differently. There are other autoimmune blistering diseases of the skin, such as bullous pemphigoid, bullous lupus, and Hailey-Hailey disease that can be confused with pemphigus. Because this is a complex condition to diagnose, special testing is needed. The three main categories of pemphigus are pemphigus vulgaris, pemphigus foliaceus and paraneoplastic pemphigus. |

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is the most common form of pemphigus and usually begins as blisters in the mouth. Inflammation or erosions may also be present in the lining of the eye and eyelids, and the membranes of the nose or genital tract. Half of the patients also develop blisters or erosions of the skin, often in the groin, underarm, face, scalp and chest areas. The lesions can cover extensive portions of the body. When the blisters or bullae rupture they leave red erosions surrounded by a crust and scaling skin.

Pemphigus foliaceus (PF) is a superficial, relatively mild form of pemphigus. It usually manifests on the face and scalp, but also involves the back and chest. Lesions do not occur in the mouth. The blisters are more confined to the outermost surface and often itch.

Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PP; PNP) is very rare and generally occurs in people who have cancer. The lesions are painful and affect the mouth, lips and esophagus (swallowing tube) as well as the skin. Due to involvement of the airways, signs of respiratory disease may occur and can be life-threatening.
