Hemangiomas can appear as three different forms. The first type is the superficial bright red form, formerly known as the strawberry mark. The second type is the deep blue nodule, formerly known as a cavernous hemangioma. The third type is a combination of the superficial and the deep forms, which is called a mixed hemangioma. Commonly, the terms "superficial," "deep," and "mixed" are used to describe the three different types of hemangiomas.
Hemangiomas are present in perhaps 10% of all babies born. Sixty percent of them are located in the head and neck region. They have a phase of rapid growth that lasts 6-10 months, followed by gradual shrinkage or involution that lasts several years. About 50% of hemangiomas are essentially gone in five years, and perhaps 90% or more by ten years of age.
Hemangiomas may be present anywhere on the body. However, they are most disturbing to parents when they are on the infant's face or head. Hemangiomas of the eyelid may interfere with the development of normal vision and must be treated in the first few months of life. On rare occasions, the size and location of hemangiomas may interfere with breathing, feeding, or other vital functions. These lesions also require early treatment.
Hemangiomas are abnormally dense collections of dilated small blood vessels (capillaries) that may occur in the skin or internal organs. These are commonly found in the head, heart, limbs, liver, abdomen, skin and cord.
Types of hemangiomas include stork bite or nevus simplex, port wine stain, strawberry or mulberry birthmarks, and cavernous hemangiomas.
The exact cause of hemangiomas is not known at this time. Hemangiomas are not usually hereditary, although 10% of infants have a family history of these vascular birthmarks. No known food, medication, or activity during pregnancy can cause a hemangioma.
