The disorder is caused by infestation with the roundworms Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale, Ancylostoma ceylanicum, or Ancylostoma braziliense. The first two occur in humans only. The last two types also occur in animals.

Hookworm is not spread directly from one person to another. It is transmitted when the microscopic hookworm eggs in human or animal feces (stool) are deposited on the ground, hatch and develop into tiny larvae. People become infected when the larvae penetrate the skin, usually of the foot. The larvae eventually migrate to the small intestine where they attach to the intestinal wall, mature into adult hookworms and produce eggs in 6-7 weeks. Without treatment the infection may persist for several years. |
When the larvae penetrate the skin, they produce a characteristic skin rash termed "ground itch". Abdominal pain, diarrhea, and weight loss may occur when the worms attach to the intestinal wall. If the infection is light, few or no symptoms may occur. If the infection is heavy, iron deficiency and anemia may develop. Prolonged heavy infections can retard mental and physical development. |
Hookworm infection is diagnosed by finding hookworm eggs in stool samples - this is usually straightforward as many thousands are produced every day. Stool examination may however be negative in the early stages of infection before adult worms have matured and started to produce eggs. |
Hookworm infection can be avoided or reduced by educating the public about the importance of wearing shoes and preventing soil contamination with human or dog faeces. Human faeces ('night soil') should not be used as a fertiliser. Adequate sanitation facilities should be provided. Patients who have hookworm infection should be treated to reduce the risk of transmission to others. |
