Leprosy is caused by the organism Mycobacterium leprae. It is a difficult disease to transmit and has a long incubation period, which makes it difficult to determine where or when the disease was contracted. Children are more susceptible than adults to contracting the disease. |
There are two basic types of leprosy: lepromatous leprosy (LL) and tuberculoid leprosy (TL). Either of these may be classified as borderline (borderline lepromatous or BL and borderline tuberculoid or BT). Patients who fall between the two basic types may be classified as borderline borderline (BB); and patients with vaguely defined (often early) lesions may be classified as indeterminate (I). |
Both tuberculoid and lepromatous forms of leprosy produce lesions on the skin, but the lepromatous form is most severe, producing large disfiguring nodules. All forms of the disease eventually cause peripheral neurological damage (nerve damage in the extremities) manifested by sensory loss in the skin and weakness of the muscles. People with long-term leprosy may lose the use of their hands or feet due to repeated injury which results from absent sensation. |
Complications of leprosy include severe neuritic pain, contractures and crippling of the hands and feet, neuropathic plantar ulcers, secondary infections, complete nasal obstruction, saddlenose deformity, scarring of the testes resulting in infertility, eye damage and blindness. |
Leprosy can present at any age, although cases in infants under 1 year are extremely rare |
