Tinea versicolor is a relatively common skin infection caused by the fungus Pityrosporum orbiculare, a type of yeast. This fungus is considered part of the normal flora (microorganisms that normally occur) on human skin and only becomes troublesome under certain circumstances. |
The most commonly affected sites are the back, underarm, upper arms, chest, and neck. The typical lesion is a flat discoloration with a sharp border and fine scales. The lesions are typically dark tan with a reddish cast. |
Tinea versicolor has small, scaly white-to-pink or tan-to-dark spots which can be scattered over the upper arms, chest and back. They may sometimes appear on the neck and the face. On light skin, tinea versicolor may be faint or can appear as tan-to-pink spots, while on dark skin tinea versicolor may be light or dark. The fungus grows slowly and prevents the skin from tanning normally. As the rest of the skin tans in the sun, the pale spots, which are affected by the yeast, become more noticeable, especially on dark skin. |
When the yeast grows on untanned skin, the rash is pink to brown. When the yeast grows on tanned skin, the rash looks white because the yeast blocks out the sunlight and the skin where the yeast is growing does not tan. When growing on Asian or African-American skin, the rash can look darker or lighter than the surrounding skin depending on the patient. |
Tinea versicolor is common year-round in the tropics and subtropics, and is seen in the summer months in more temperate climates, because the yeast grows best in hot and humid conditions. The rash occurs more often in teen-agers and young adults, and appears on the back, neck, upper chest, shoulders, armpits and upper arms. It is more likely to occur on oily skin. |
In African Americans, pigmentary changes are common with hypopigmentation (loss of color) or hyperpigmentation (increase in skin color). Itching may be present. |
