A stye is caused by an infection in the sebaceous (oil producing) or sweat glands in the eyelid. The infection is usually caused by bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus.
Styes usually develop over a few days and may drain and heal on their own. Sometimes, however, the immune response may kill the bacteria but leave behind a chronic lipogranuloma, called a chalazion.
There are two types of hordeolum. The first is called an external hordeolum or stye, which results from an acute bacterial infection of the sebaceous glands of the eyelid (these are small glands at the base of the hair follicles that form the lashline for the upper and lower lid). The other type is an internal hordeolum, which results from a similar bacterial infection of the meibomian glands of the eyelid (these glands secrete a very clear oil that makes up an important part of the normal tear fluid).
Both types of hordeolum result in pressure created by the inflammation. Pain or tenderness is usually experienced when the area is touched.
Hordeola are found more frequently in persons who have the following:
  • Diabetes
  • Other debilitating illness
  • Chronic blepharitis
  • Seborrhea
  • High serum lipids (High lipid levels increase the blockage rate of sebaceous glands, but lowering of serum lipid levels in these patients has not decreased frequency of recurrence.)
