Tinnitus can be caused by the following:
  • Wax in the ear canal, a stiffening of the middle ear bones (ossicles) or a hole in the eardrum can cause tinnitus. These problems usually can be corrected and the tinnitus goes away.
  • Exposure to loud noises can cause tinnitus and permanent hearing loss. Hearing loss may be sudden or gradual depending on the volume and length of exposure to the loud sound. Tinnitus may occur at the same time as or after exposure to the loud sound.
  • Some medications have tinnitus as a side effect.
  • Tinnitus can be a normal part of hearing loss that often comes with aging.
  • Less common causes of tinnitus and hearing loss include trauma to the head, problems with the temporomandibular (jaw) joint, disorders of the neck vertebrae and certain medications that in high doses specifically damage the ear.
  • Another cause is Meniere's disease, a condition comprising deafness, dizziness and tinnitus, caused by increased pressure in the inner ear.
  • High blood pressure and factors that increase the blood pressure such as stress, alcohol and caffeine are tinnitus causes and can make the sounds more noticeable.
  • Specific foods may trigger tinnitus. Problem foods include red wine, grain-based spirits, cheese, and chocolate. Tinnitus may also be caused by foods rich in salicylates (the same ingredient as in aspirin, which also causes tinnitus when taken in large amounts).
  • Stress is not a direct cause of tinnitus, but it may generally make an already existing case worse.
  • Tinnitus is also caused due to excessive masturbation or sex and general weakness.
There are several common types of tinnitus:
  • Tonal tinnitus is often called "ringing in the ears." This type of tinnitus produces a continuous sound, like a single note playing over and over.
  • Pulsatile tinnitus, in which the tinnitus sounds are intermittent, continuous, or pulsating in time with the heartbeat.
  • Tinnitus in which the sound is a ringing, buzzing, roaring, whistling, or hissing noise.
  • Less common tinnitus, in which the sounds are described as beeping, Morse code type of signals, or even a musical notes.
  • Less common still is tinnitus experienced as several different types of noises at the same time.
  • In a rare, unusual type of tinnitus, known as "objective tinnitus," the noise is heard not only by the affected individual but also by others.
